Transformer Oil Procurement Guide: IEC 60296, Testing & Storage
A buyer's guide to procuring dielectric fluids for power transformers in accordance with IEC 60296.

Transformer oil (dielectric fluid) serves two critical functions in electrical equipment: it insulates the internal components and dissipates heat. Procuring the correct oil is vital for grid reliability.
IEC 60296 Standards
IEC 60296 is the international standard for unused mineral insulating oils. When procuring transformer oil, buyers must verify compliance with this standard, specifically looking at:
- Dielectric Breakdown Voltage: Must be high to prevent arcing.
- Moisture Content: Must be extremely low. Water severely degrades insulating properties.
- Oxidation Stability: Determines the lifespan of the oil inside the transformer.
- Corrosive Sulfur: Must be absent to prevent the formation of conductive copper sulfide on windings.
Handling and Storage
Transformer oil is highly hygroscopic (absorbs moisture from the air). It must be stored in sealed, dry conditions. Drums should be stored horizontally to prevent water from pooling on the top and being drawn in through the bungs as the drum breathes with temperature changes.
