Marine Gas Oil MGO Guide: IMO 2020, ISO 8217 & Bunker Checklist

Procuring marine fuels has become increasingly complex following the implementation of the IMO 2020 regulations. Marine Gas Oil (MGO DMA) is a primary choice for vessels operating in Emission Control Areas (ECAs) and those without exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers).

    IMO 2020 Compliance

The IMO 2020 rule strictly limits the sulphur content in marine fuels:

    • Global Limit: 0.50% m/m (outside ECAs)
    • ECA Limit: 0.10% m/m (inside Emission Control Areas)

MGO DMA typically meets the 0.10% requirement, making it universally compliant.

    ISO 8217 Specifications

Always procure MGO against the ISO 8217 standard (preferably the latest revision). Key parameters to check on the Certificate of Quality include:

    • Density at 15°C (max 890.0 kg/m³)
    • Kinematic Viscosity at 40°C
    • Flash Point (min 60°C for marine safety)
    • Pour Point
    • Microbial contamination limits

    Secure Compliant Marine Fuels

AAA International supplies ISO 8217 compliant MGO and VLSFO with full documentation.
