    Selecting the correct hydraulic oil viscosity is the single most important factor in hydraulic system reliability. In the GCC, where ambient temperatures can exceed 50°C, choosing between ISO VG 32, 46, and 68 requires careful consideration of operating conditions.

    Understanding ISO Viscosity Grades

    The ISO Viscosity Grade (VG) indicates the fluid's kinematic viscosity at 40°C in centistokes (cSt).

    • ISO VG 32: Lower viscosity (thinner). Best for cooler operating environments or systems requiring rapid response.
    • ISO VG 46: Medium viscosity. The most common all-rounder for industrial plants with controlled temperatures.
    • ISO VG 68: Higher viscosity (thicker). Ideal for high-temperature environments, heavy loads, and outdoor mobile equipment in the Middle East.

    Engineering Calculation: Cleanliness Impact

    Hydraulic oil cleanliness is measured using ISO 4406 codes, which express solid particle contamination based on particles larger than 4 µm, 6 µm, and 14 µm.

    Each increase in the ISO range number represents a doubling of the contamination level.

    Improvement: ISO 20/18/15 to ISO 17/15/12
    Reduction = 3 ISO code levels
